Career and Technical Education
Summit CTE Pathways Program
- Students who are potentially interested in the medical field as a career
goal/pathway, as documented through ICAP plans, are presented with
information about the program.
- Guest speakers( UC Health Sexual Education Department)
- An introductory class for 8th grade students. Students are also recruited
from other students. Excitement begins in middle school, and students are
often let down they cannot join full time as this is an 8th grade program.
Many 6th graders come to just sit in the class. Students are exposed to
blood pressure, pulse, height and weight, etc.
- Students are required to have scrub uniforms and this peaks interest for
other students. Students that are in the Anatomy & Physiology course
participate in the Student Volunteer Program at Presbyterian Saint Luke’s
Hospital. The students understand as volunteers they are a vital part of the
PSL patient care team, so they’re provided with the training and support
needed to feel confident and succeed in their roles. Consistency is key to
making the most of their volunteering experience. Students in the Intro. To
Medical Assistant course, participate in a Externship that requires 100 hrs to
qualify to taker the CCMA Certification through NHA. Medical assistants (MAs)
are critical members of healthcare teams in a variety of medical settings. As an
MA, you are often the first and last person a patient interacts with, making a
lasting impact on the patient experience. MAs are flexible, performing a variety
of tasks such as: Taking patient vital signs, assisting providers with exams
and procedures, administering injections or medications, performing EKG,
phlebotomy and other essential laboratory procedures, checking patients in
and out upon arrival and departure, answering phone calls and questions,
updating and maintaining electronic health records (EHR). The meeting of last
year’s Advisory Board we were able to agree to change the minimum
commitment of 130 volunteer hours to 50 within the trimester following
orientation. Summit A&P Students volunteer on a weekly basis, 4.5 hours in
length, at times that best suits their schedule. Summit Intro to Medical
Assistant students work in a health clinic 2 days a week 8-3:30 similar to an
regular school day to obtain the necessary required 100 extern hours. These
days vary depending on the clinics availability to train the students.
